The Lifeguarding course includes all of the skills and knowledge material needed to work as a lifeguard at traditional pools.  All courses will be conducted through the Blended learning program. The blended learning program combines the online (e-learning) content and on-site session to ensure that the necessary content is delivered. Participants will receive a link via email and must complete all of the online content 48 hours prior to the first in person session. On the first day of the course, you must pass the water skills test shown below in order to continue in the class.  You will be certified in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED (2 years) if you attend all course sessions, participate fully, and pass all physical tests and evaluations with a grade of at least 80%. Note: CPR is assessed at the professional rescuer level and is only valid for 1 year for Lifeguards in NY.

Prerequisites:  (Prerequisite water testing takes place on the first day of classes.)

  1. Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.
  2. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in our out of the water. Swim goggles not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7-10 ft to retrieve a 10 pound object.
  • Return to the surface & swim 20 yds on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object & keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.


Course Materials:  An email with a link to the online portion that must be completed prior to the first in-persion session will be sent upon registration. American Red Cross Lifeguard Review
The Lifeguard Review course is intended for individuals who need to renew their certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training. All courses will be conducted through the Blended learning program. The blended learning program combines the online (e-learning) content and on-site session to ensure that the necessary content is delivered. Participants will receive a link via email and must complete all of the online content 48 hours prior to the first in person session. Upon completion, you will be re-certified in Lifeguarding/First Aid (2 years) and CPR/AED Professional Rescuer (1 year) if you attend both course sessions, participate fully, and pass all physical tests and evaluations with a grade of at least 80%. Please note that this is a review course, and you must bring your current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification and a pocket mask to class.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review

This course is designed for Lifeguards that have a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate. Please note that this is a review course, and you must bring a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certificate, and a pocket mask to class.  CPR/AED certification is valid for 1 year for Lifeguards in NY.
